Casa Amate, Mérida: A Quiet Pink Escape in the Heart of the City
There are places you visit while traveling, and then there are places that seem to ask you to slow down.
Casa Amate is the latter.

Tucked into the rhythm of downtown Mérida, Mexico, this beautiful pink retreat feels almost like a pause from the city surrounding it. Step inside and everything becomes a little quieter — rustic textures, warm walls, pockets of greenery, soft light, and minimal corners that leave enough empty space for your mind to wander.
I spent some time photographing Casa Amate during my travels through Mexico, and what stayed with me wasn’t simply how beautiful it was.
It was the feeling of the place.

A Different Rhythm in Mérida
Mérida is one of those cities meant to be lived and experience slowly.
There is color everywhere, incredible architecture, busy streets, history, food, music, and the unmistakable warmth of Yucatán. Y
ou can spend hours walking through the historic center and still feel like there is another street calling you around the corner.
And sometimes, after all that exploring, you need somewhere that asks absolutely nothing of you.
Casa Amate offers that contrast beautifully.
Behind its pink walls is a slower world. The rustic architecture and understated design don’t compete for attention. Instead, there are small moments everywhere — sunlight moving across a wall, a quiet chair tucked into a corner, plants interrupting the warm tones of the architecture.
It is minimal without feeling cold and beautiful without trying too hard.

For the Traveler Who Wants Both Community and Privacy
Part of what makes Casa Amate interesting is that there isn’t only one way to experience it.
If what you want is to make friends, and keep it lower budget, Casa Amate has shared accommodations that embrace the communal spirit of hostel travel.
There are also options for travelers who prefer more privacy and want their own space to retreat to at the end of the day.
That balance feels especially fitting for Mérida. You can spend the day immersed in the energy of the city, meeting people and discovering somewhere new, and still have a quiet place to return to when you’re ready to slow down.

A Place to Take a Breath
Casa Amate also incorporates experiences centered around rest and wellbeing, including yoga and other calming activities that complement the atmosphere of the property.
And perhaps that is what I loved most about photographing it.
The cool thing about this place, is that it’s about the experience. Which it’s centered solely around having somewhere to sleep. There is an invitation to actually be there.
To have a slow morning, notice the light. And sit somewhere without immediately wondering what comes next. It’s maybe to just take a breath before heading back into the city.
Travel can so easily become a list of places we need to see and things we need to accomplish. Spaces like this are a reminder that sometimes the moments between those plans become part of what we remember most.

A Stay for a Slower Side of Mérida
If you’re planning time in Mérida and are drawn to thoughtful design, communal travel, and spaces with a quieter rhythm, Casa Amate offers an interesting alternative to a traditional hotel stay.
Its location makes it possible to experience the energy, architecture, food, and culture of Mérida while having somewhere peaceful to return to between adventures. Shared accommodations offer a more accessible option for travelers interested in meeting others along the way, while private spaces allow for a more intimate experience.
For me, though, its greatest appeal is the atmosphere.
Mérida gives you so much to see; Casa Amate gives you somewhere to stop seeing for a moment and simply take it all in.

Photographing the Soul of a Place
When I photograph a hotel, restaurant, creative space, or destination, I’m interested in more than documenting what it looks like.
I want to understand what it feels like to spend time there.
That means photographing the architecture and beautiful details, of course, but also watching how the light changes, noticing the quiet corners, documenting the surrounding environment, and looking for the small things that give a place its identity.
Casa Amate was especially beautiful to photograph because its personality lives in those subtleties.
The pink walls. The rustic textures. The simplicity. The stillness.
Together, they tell a much larger story.

Mérida Through My Lens
Travel has always influenced the way I see and create.
My background in documentary storytelling has taught me to arrive somewhere curious — to observe before deciding what the story should be. Whether I’m photographing a couple wandering through an unfamiliar city, an intimate destination wedding, or a hospitality space like Casa Amate, I want the photographs to preserve something beyond appearance.
I want them to preserve a sense of place.
Photographing in Mérida reminded me again why I love creating work away from home. New architecture, cultures, landscapes, people, and rhythms inevitably change the way I see.
And that curiosity follows me into whatever I photograph next.

For Those Planning Their Own Story Somewhere Else
Some stories belong close to home. Others make sense somewhere you’ve never been before.
I photograph weddings, elopements, couples, creative projects, and hospitality stories throughout the United States and internationally. My work blends documentary observation with an editorial approach, creating photographs that feel rooted in the place where they were made rather than simply using it as a backdrop.
So whether your story takes us through the streets of Mérida, into a quiet hotel somewhere in Europe, through New York at night, or somewhere neither of us has discovered yet, I’m always interested in where the story could take us.
