Grandview Overlook from Mt. Washington of Pittsburgh Skyline

Falling in Love with Pittsburgh during the Autumn Season

There’s something truly magical about Pittsburgh in the fall — when the city starts to glow in golden hues and the trees wrap the skyline in warmth.

If you’re looking for things to do in Pittsburgh during the fall season, let me give you some of my favorite recommendations.

Pittsburgh Bridges from Grandview Overlook

One of my favorite places to soak in that view is Mt. Washington. Every time I take the incline up and step out to see the city from Grandview Overlook, I fall in love with Pittsburgh all over again.

As a documentary photographer, I’m always chasing the light — and Mt. Washington gives you some of the best light you’ll find anywhere in the city.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have lived here for years, I want to invite you to experience this part of Pittsburgh with fresh eyes.

Here’s how to spend a day exploring Mt. Washington and truly feel its beauty.

Start Your Day with the Best View in Pittsburgh

There’s no better way to begin than by heading straight to Grandview Overlook.

As the morning light hits the city’s rivers and bridges, you’ll see why locals and visitors alike never get tired of this view.

Bring your coffee, breathe in the crisp air, and just watch as the sun rises over the city — it’s peaceful, grounding, and a little bit magical.

If you’re into photography, this is a dream spot.

The way the light hits the buildings, the way the rivers curve — every frame tells a story. I’ve spent countless mornings here capturing the golden glow that settles over Downtown Pittsburgh in the fall.

Ride the Duquesne or Monongahela Incline

Next, take a ride on one of Pittsburgh’s historic inclines. Both the Duquesne Incline and Monongahela Incline offer incredible views as you glide down toward Station Square or back up to Grandview Avenue.

It’s one of those quintessential Pittsburgh experiences that connects you to the city’s history while offering postcard-perfect photo moments.

Enjoy Lunch with a View

When it’s time for lunch, Mt. Washington has plenty of restaurants that pair incredible food with unbeatable views.

A few of my favorites include:

  • Altius – Elegant dining with panoramic views and a modern twist on Pittsburgh classics.
  • Monterey Bay Fish Grotto – Perfect for seafood lovers and sunset watchers alike.
  • Grandview Saloon – A casual spot where you can grab a drink, enjoy great food, and watch the city come alive below.

If you’re looking for something simple, grab a sandwich or salad to go and picnic near the overlooks. Sometimes the best meals are the ones enjoyed outside, wrapped in fall air with the city at your feet.

Wander and Discover Hidden Corners

One of my favorite things about Mt. Washington is how walkable it is.

Take a slow stroll along Grandview Avenue and stop at the various overlooks — each one offers a slightly different perspective of Pittsburgh’s skyline.

As you walk, notice the small details: the rust-colored leaves swirling in the wind, the sound of the inclines, the chatter of people discovering the view for the first time.

These are the little things that make Pittsburgh feel alive — and as a photographer, I can’t help but capture them every time.

Treat Yourself to Ice Cream and Sunset

Before you wrap up your day, stop by DiFiore’s Ice Cream Delite or grab a cone from a local shop nearby.

Then find a spot at one of the overlooks to watch the sunset. As the sun dips behind the hills, the city transforms — the sky turns golden, the rivers shimmer, and the lights of the bridges begin to twinkle.

It’s one of the most romantic, simple, and joyful things you can do in Pittsburgh.

Emerald View Park

One of my personal favorite spots in Mt. Washington is Emerald View Park. It has incredible Pittsburgh skyline views, and if you catch it right before sunset, WOW! It’s incredible.

You can sit and enjoy the view, it’s truly magical.

End the Evening in Good Company

Whether you’re out with your partner, your family, or just taking time for yourself, Mt. Washington is a place that reminds you how beautiful the simple moments can be.

It’s where you can walk, laugh, talk, and see the city from a new perspective — both literally and figuratively.

Every time I photograph Pittsburgh from Mt. Washington, I see something new. The light shifts, the people change, and yet the feeling is always the same — a quiet, awe-filled appreciation for this city I call home.

So the next time you’re looking for things to do in Pittsburgh, skip the rush and head up to Mt. Washington.

Ride the incline, grab ice cream, take in the view, and maybe even snap a few photos of your own. Let yourself fall in love with the city again — just like I do, every time I look through my camera lens.
