Why the Allegheny County Courthouse Is One of the Most Beautiful Wedding Locations in Pittsburgh

There is something incredibly romantic about an intimate courthouse wedding. Stripped of unnecessary pressure and expectations, the day becomes about what truly matters — two people choosing each other and celebrating that moment in a meaningful way.

One of my favorite places in Pittsburgh for intimate weddings is the historic Allegheny County Courthouse.

Located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, this architectural masterpiece offers one of the most beautiful and timeless settings for couples who want a wedding that feels elegant, personal, and unforgettable.

As a documentary wedding photographer based in Pittsburgh, I’ve photographed several courthouse weddings here, and every single one has felt unique and deeply emotional.

If you’re thinking about getting married at the courthouse, here is everything you need to know to plan a beautiful and intentional wedding day.

Why Couples Love Getting Married at the Allegheny County Courthouse

The Allegheny County Courthouse is one of the most iconic buildings in Pittsburgh. Designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson in the late 1800s, the courthouse features stunning Romanesque architecture with warm stone walls, dramatic staircases, towering archways, and a beautiful open courtyard.

From a photographer’s perspective, it’s a dream location!

The natural light that pours through the tall windows, the textures of the stone walls, and the quiet elegance of the staircases create an atmosphere that feels almost cinematic.

It’s the kind of place where simple, unscripted moments become beautiful works of art.

Many couples choose a courthouse wedding here because it allows them to focus on the experience rather than the production of a traditional wedding day. With just a few close family members or friends present, the celebration becomes more intimate and meaningful.

How to Get Married at the Allegheny County Courthouse

Planning a courthouse wedding in Pittsburgh is actually very simple.

First, you’ll need to obtain a marriage license from the Allegheny County Marriage License Bureau. Pennsylvania has a mandatory three-day waiting period, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Once you receive your license, you can schedule a civil ceremony with a judge or officiant. Some couples also choose to sign their marriage license privately and then hold a small symbolic ceremony with their closest family members.

One of the things I love about courthouse weddings is that they allow couples to create a day that feels truly personal. Some couples keep things very simple, while others turn their courthouse ceremony into a full wedding experience with getting ready photos, portraits around the city, and a celebratory dinner afterward.

Do You Need a Permit for Photos at the Courthouse?

The courthouse is a public building, which means photography is generally allowed in many areas. However, certain spaces may have restrictions depending on the day and courthouse activity.

For couples planning wedding portraits, I always recommend arriving earlier in the day when the courthouse is quieter. This allows us to explore the architecture more freely and create images that feel calm, romantic, and uninterrupted.

If you are planning a larger group or specific photo locations inside the courthouse, it’s always a good idea to check with courthouse administration in advance.

You have a few options for your ceremony:

  • Judge’s Office Ceremony: Some judges perform wedding ceremonies in their chambers. You’ll need to call ahead and schedule a time.
  • Civil Ceremony at the Courthouse: You can request a civil ceremony when applying for your license. Availability varies, so ask for details when you apply.
  • Off-Site Ceremony: If you want a courthouse backdrop but a more personal experience, hire an officiant and take portraits around the city.

The Most Beautiful Photo Locations at the Courthouse

One of the reasons I love photographing weddings here is because there are so many incredible architectural backdrops within a few steps.

Some of my favorite photo spots include:

The Grand Staircase
The sweeping staircase inside the courthouse is one of the most iconic places for portraits. The scale and symmetry of the architecture make couples look almost like they are inside a classic European building.

The Courtyard
The courtyard is filled with arches and beautiful warm stone that glows softly in natural light.

Archways and Columns
These create stunning framing elements that add depth and elegance to photographs.

Downtown Pittsburgh Streets
Just outside the courthouse you’ll find beautiful city streets, historic buildings, and dramatic urban textures that add variety to your photos.

Many couples also choose to take additional portraits nearby at locations like the Omni William Penn Hotel or around Grant Street for a more editorial city feel.

Examples:

A Perfect Timeline for a Courthouse Wedding

One of the best parts about a courthouse wedding is how relaxed the timeline can be. Here’s an example of a beautiful, simple wedding day flow:

Getting Ready at a Downtown Hotel
Many couples get ready at nearby hotels where we can photograph meaningful details and emotional moments before the ceremony.

First Look
A private first look allows you to slow down and enjoy a quiet moment together before the ceremony.

Courthouse Ceremony
Your ceremony can be short and meaningful, surrounded by the people who matter most.

Portraits Inside the Courthouse
After the ceremony we explore the courthouse together for romantic architectural portraits.

Downtown Golden Hour Photos
If the timing works, we can step outside to capture the golden light reflecting off Pittsburgh’s beautiful buildings.

Dinner Celebration
Many couples end the evening with a small dinner at one of the city’s incredible restaurants.

Tips for Making Your Courthouse Wedding Feel Special

Even though courthouse weddings are simple, they can still feel incredibly elegant and personal.

Some ideas I always suggest to couples include:

• Bring a bouquet or florals to add color and texture to your photos
• Exchange private vows together after the ceremony
• Choose outfits that feel timeless and elegant
• Invite just a few loved ones to witness the moment
• Plan a romantic dinner afterward to celebrate

The beauty of a courthouse wedding is that it allows you to focus on the moments themselves — the laughter, the quiet excitement, and the emotion of the day.

Why I Love Photographing Courthouse Weddings

As a documentary photographer, courthouse weddings align perfectly with how I approach photography.

The moments are real.
The emotions are genuine.
And the environment itself already tells a beautiful story.

When couples choose to get married at the Allegheny County Courthouse, the day often feels slower, more intentional, and more connected. Instead of rushing from one event to the next, we have space to observe, explore the architecture, and create images that feel timeless and deeply personal.
