Are you looking to have the most incredible Pittsburgh Engagement? An experience of a lifetime that you will never forget?! Then you are in the right place. I can’t wait to start planning yours!
Have you ever heard of Moraine State Park? It’s a just a short drive from both Pittsburgh and Ohio. It offers an ideal romantic setting, especially if you’re dreaming of a session inspired by Romance.
As a Pittsburgh-based documentary wedding photographer, my goal is to create timeless, cinematic images that capture the essence of your love story, and Moraine State Park is the perfect place to do just that.
Moraine State Park is one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful locations for a romantic photo shoot.
Everything from the peaceful Lake Arthur, sprawling meadows, and charming wooded trails, it offers the perfect scenery to create those iconic, romantic moments.
Whether you’re looking for a lakeside photo with the sun setting behind you or a playful, carefree stroll through a field, Moraine State Park is the backdrop you’ve been searching for.
Conveniently located less than an hour from Pittsburgh and Ohio, Moraine State Park allows you to feel like you’ve escaped into nature without being too far from the city.
Its natural beauty is a stunning contrast to Pittsburgh’s urban backdrop, making it a go-to destination if you are interested in a serene and romantic setting for your engagement photos.
One of the most special moments I’ve had the privilege of capturing was when Max reached out to me to plan a surprise proposal for his girlfriend, Joie, at Moraine State Park.
Max had envisioned a moment that was not only romantic but also completely unexpected for Joie, and together, we created a plan that ensured every detail of the proposal would remain a secret.
I had previously talked to Joie when she booked me for their Allegheny County Courthouse Elopement, which will be happening in less than a month. That’s when she told me what she dreamt of, and how I knew what she wanted.
On the day of the proposal, the serene beauty of Moraine State Park set the perfect scene. As you can see, it wasn’t a sunny day, which worked for us, and gave us more of a romantic and moody backdrop.
Max and I had planned to meet at one of the park’s secluded spots by Lake Arthur. A location framed by peaceful waters and the golden glow of the sunset.
Joie thought she was just there for a casual couple’s photo shoot, but what she didn’t know was that Max had the biggest surprise of her life waiting for her.
Joie arrived to Max waiting for her where they had their first date.
Max got down on one knee, and the look on Joie’s face was pure magic—shock, joy, and love all in one. The surprise element made the experience so much more special for Joie.
The photos I captured that day weren’t just images—they were moments of pure, unfiltered emotion. Moments like these are what make being a documentary wedding photographer so rewarding.
If you’re planning a proposal, adding that surprise element can elevate the entire experience. The raw emotions, the unplanned reactions, and the joy of the moment all come together to create something magical.
Whether it’s a surprise proposal like Max and Joie’s or a planned engagement session, Moraine State Park is the perfect backdrop for your love story. Especially if you are inspired by films like The Notebook.

For a romantic, Notebook-inspired shoot, think vintage elegance combined with effortless charm.
I can’t emphasize enough how importance of what you wear to your photo shoot. That’s why I want to give you as many tips as I can.
For Her: Flowy, soft dresses in colors like pastel blue, soft pink, or cream will complement the park’s natural tones beautifully.
Look for dresses with subtle pastel colors or romantic lace details to add that vintage vibe.
One of my top recommendations is Anthropologie in Pittsburgh. While they specialize in bridal gowns, they also offer dresses that can work beautifully for engagement shoots.
If you’re looking for more casual chic, Free People in the North Hills area. It offers a variety of vintage-inspired dresses that are perfect for this theme.

To achieve that relaxed elegance, consider shopping at Surmesur Pittsburgh. You can find custom-fitted shirts and trousers that give a polished, yet comfortable look.
For a more laid-back feel, Bonobos in Shadyside offers versatile options that will look effortlessly stylish in your engagement photos.
The Importance of Props in a Lover’s Experience
One often overlooked element that can take your couple’s photo shoot to the next level is the use of props.
Whether it’s a surprise proposal like Max and Joie’s magical moment or a romantic, Notebook-inspired session at Moraine State Park, incorporating meaningful props can enhance your story and make your photos even more unique.
Props bring a personal touch to your photos and help create moments that are authentic to your relationship.
Imagine cozying up under a vintage blanket by the water. Sharing a picnic basket filled with your favorite treats, or rowing a boat across the lake like Noah and Allie.
These small details add depth to your experience. Making your engagement session feel like more than just a photo shoot—it’s a reflection of your love and your shared moments.
If you’re like Joie and Max and you’re inspired by the romance of The Notebook, bring a vintage parasol, old letters, or even a favorite book to read can create those whimsical, cinematic moments you’re dreaming of.
The props not only add charm to the images but also give you something to interact with. This helps the photos more dynamic and bringing out your natural chemistry.
